Backlash at YouTube Star Regarding Suicide Video
January 4, 2018- YouTube personality Logan Paul continues to face intense criticism after he posted a video of a victim of suicide found while Logan and his group where visiting a Japanese forest known as a location for suicides.
The staff at 211 HelpLine want the community to turn this conversation into one that can have a positive impact in suicide prevention efforts.
Many within the global community recognize suicide as a public health issue and that suicide is also a very complex problem with multiple causes that can be contributing factors.
Three key components for prevention strategies include: education, breaking down the stigma of reaching out for mental health services and removing the barriers to getting help. It is important to note that for every one person that dies by suicide, 278 think seriously but do not die. Every day the staff at 211 help people in crisis-with compassion and caring, and are also available if a person just needs to talk.
211 can help connect individuals and families to community resources and services.
It is also important to emphasize that you do not have to be a trained mental health professional to help a loved one.
Ask directly if your loved is thinking about suicide
Try to remove any means of self-harm
Simply listen without judgment
Connect your loved one to resources and support
Continue to follow-up in the days and weeks after a crisis
Mental health and wellness is just as important as physical health and wellness. Continue the conversation by participating with local coalitions and initiatives and consider taking a Mental Health First Aid class which is often offered at no cost.
